Local company strives to keep apprenticeship scheme going
A North Staffordshire businessman is asking his customers and suppliers to back his company's long-standing support for local apprentices. Endon Services, a small independent garage and Ford, Renault and MG Rover dealer in Endon near Stoke on Trent, has launched 'Adopt an Apprentice'. The scheme is hoped to counter falling trade from the recession which would otherwise spell the end for the company's practice of taking on new apprentices from the local community.
Under the terms of the scheme, suppliers are being asked to pledge a rebate of 1% of Endon's annual spend with them, and customers are asked to join the company's innovative new fixed-price servicing plan. If 200 customers sign-up then Endon Services Managing Director Reg Aldridge is guaranteeing to create a new and extra technician apprentice role.
Reg is confident the scheme can work, but only with the goodwill of his customers. He said: "Times are really extremely tough for the UK car industry, and with the best will in the world we cannot at the moment afford to take on a new apprentice - but we aren't just going to give up. We're proud of our track-record in bringing in apprentices, and with record youth unemployment it is the duty of all employers to try to do their bit to help local young people learn a trade and get a good start in a useful career. “Adopt an Apprentice” is our way to continue that good work, and I'm asking everyone locally to help us get there."
"If 200 people sign-up to our scheme, I will guarantee to take on a new apprentice to join the experienced team in our workshop. Our fixed-price servicing offer is very simple and affordable and will save all of our customers money in any case. Giving customers the chance to fix their servicing costs from just £12 per month with no small-print or commitment is a great service in these difficult times. I'm confident that our customers will see the benefit both for themselves and for a young person who will benefit hugely from the success of the scheme."
